Encaustic painting is an ancient painting technique that has resurfaced in recent times as a modern art medium. Encaustic paint is composed of pure beeswax, pigment and damar resin and formed into molded shapes such as cakes or bars. To be used, it is then melted using a hot plate and heat gun and applied to the surface using heated brushes and other molding tools.
Encaustic painting creates art of tremendous texture, depth, and spontaneity allowing for powerful and bold expression. Although it lends itself to more abstract applications, it can be used to create a wide variety of effects.
